What: The pre-climbing checklist is a job aid designed to act as a quick, in-context review of the necessary steps prior to climbing on an indoor or outdoor climbing wall.
Audience: This job aid is designed to be displayed at a climbing gym in order to allow patrons to see the necessary steps they must take prior to climbing.
Tools used: Canva, Freepik, ColorPicker
Problem: A local climbing gym is overhauling its safety protocols in response to a serious fall in the climbing gym. The fall resulted from a lack of proper checks and communication between the climber and the belayer. As a result, the gym implemented a range of new safety protocols, including a reminder list.
Solution: This project combines appealing visuals and text instructions to give climbers a reminder of the necessary safety steps prior to climbing. The accident that preceded the safety overhaul was due to a climber failing to properly tie in as well as the belayer failing to double check the climber. In response to this event, the gym implemented several different forms of updated training for its patrons, including reviews of their knowledge via in person tests and infographics such as mine. These infographics were displayed by the climbers so that they would have access to the information at the time and in the context that they needed it.
Design: I designed this infographic in Canva using a cohesive, earth-tone color palette and corresponding visuals. The color palette was reminiscent of the gym's color palette and evoked an earthy, outdoor aesthetic. This meant that the infographic seamlessly blended into the climbing gym at the same time as offered valuable, relevant information.
